چکیده

X-ray standing waves ~XSW! are used to measure the structure of the ()3))R30° to (333) lowtemperature phase transition for the 1 3 monolayer Sn/Ge~111! surface. A three-dimensional direct-space imaging approach, based on the summation of several hkl XSW-measured Fourier coefficients, is demonstrated. At room temperature, the Sn atoms are found to occupy the T4-adsorption sites with one-third of the Sn atoms 0.45 Å higher than the remaining two-thirds. The (333) phase has no significant change in the XSWmeasured structural parameters. This is consistent with an order-disorder-type phase transition.

X-ray Standing Waves at Grazing Angles BY TERRENCE JACH

X-ray diffraction from crystal surfaces at grazing angles gives rise to X-ray standing waves above and below the surface. Expressions are derived for the fluorescence observed from atoms located on or in a crystal as a result of excitation by the grazing-angle X-ray standing waves. In addition to the dependence of the fluorescence on the position of the atom with regard to the crystal plane tha...

Sn/Ge(111) surface charge-density-wave phase transition

Angle-resolved photoemission has been utilized to study the surface electronic structure of 1 / 3 monolayer of Sn on Ge(111) in both the room-temperature (sqrt[3]xsqrt[3] )R30 degrees phase and the low-temperature ( 3x3) charge-density-wave phase. The results reveal a gap opening around the ( 3x3) Brillouin zone boundary, suggesting a Peierls-like transition despite the well-documented lack of ...

Exploring Ag(111) Substrate for Epitaxially Growing Monolayer Stanene: A First-Principles Study

Stanene, a two-dimensional topological insulator composed of Sn atoms in a hexagonal lattice, is a promising contender to Si in nanoelectronics. Currently it is still a significant challenge to achieve large-area, high-quality monolayer stanene. We explore the potential of Ag(111) surface as an ideal substrate for the epitaxial growth of monolayer stanene. Using first-principles calculations, w...

A theoretical case study: the Sn/Ge(111)–(3× 3) surface

We present a theoretical analysis of the Sn/Ge(111)–(3 × 3) surface. The (3 × 3) atomic structure is searched using a combination of local-orbital and plane-wave density functional methods. We find a ground state geometry that presents two different types of Sn adatoms whose vertical positions differ by ∼ 0.3 Å. The electronic structure of the surface is analysed including electron correlation ...

On the structure and evolution of the buried S/Au interface in self-assembled monolayers: X-ray standing wave results

We describe a structural study of the S/Au interface for decanethiol monolayers (C10) on a Au(111) surface using the technique of X-ray standing waves ( XSWs). The XSW results for full-coverage monolayers are inconsistent with any model incorporating a single sulfur adsorption site, such as the widely assumed threefold hollow site on the Au(111) surface. Instead, the XSW results reveal two dist...
